Have recently been reading Ralph Metzner's wonderful book "the Unfolding Self" - there are similar threads running through it, and we all benefit from being reminded.
Also not a huge fan of David Brooks but loved that book for the important questions it surfaces and certain of his insights/reminders. I tend to mark up my books, and my copy of this is rendered nearly unreadable now - areas where every sentence is underlined followed by areas where I've written in all caps across the page "NO NO NO" because he can be so rigid and dogmatic at times.
